Founded in 2008 Laurent Ferrier took the watchmaking world by storm with the introduction of a tourbillon escapement with two balance springs mounted at 180°, in quick succession the brand was awarded one of the most prestigious awards in watchmaking (Grand Prix GPHG for the Best Men’s Watch circa 2010) for the Galet Classic Tourbillon. Respecting traditions of old is a trait found in most of Laurent Ferrier’s and results in a neo-classical style.

The current collection of Laurent Ferrier can be segregated into five core collections: classic, école, square, grand sport, and bridge. The école collection is a fusion of both the classic and square models, it essentially pays due reverence to a time when watchmakers converted pocket watches into wrist-worn timepieces.

This 40mm stainless steel Laurent Ferrier Annual Calendar School Piece ‘Vintage’ is limited to just 5 examples and incorporates the brand’s contemporary vintage style flawlessly through a first-time opaline yellow gold-toned dial. Inspired by the champagne dials of the 1950-1960s, apart from the dial, the complication itself and overall layout is undoubtedly reminiscent of certain Vacheron Constantin’s from that particular era.

The yellow gold-toned opaline dial, features ruthenium-treated Assegai hands to indicate the hour and minute, a guilloched sunken sub-second indicator is found at 6’o’clock in similar fashion the small baton hand is also treated in ruthenium. A stark contrasting white central hand points to the date on a scale of vintage-style Arabic numerals. The day and month appear in two beveled apertures found just above the Laurent Ferrier -Geneve signature. Annual Calendars usually result in an overly cultured dial, due to the unique typography and placement of the date, day, and month indications results in an uncluttered dial.

The manual wound calibre LF126.01 is exposed through a sapphire caseback. The finishing of the ruthenium-treated movement includes traditional côtes de Genève, circular graining on the mainplate, manually chamfered angles and polished screw heads. Through the gold gear train and typography, the movement has an element of contrast similar to the dial, although somewhat inverted. The polished long blade click ratchet, found just above the barrel, is mirror polished and displays a rounded-off finish. The bonnet styled case back results in the caseback having no visible screw heads. The movement also displays a power reserve through a dashboard looking gauge, the movement is capable of delivering 80 hours of power.
